Last week, I made a wonderful discovery... a small quantity of spalted birch! Spalted wood is very rare and difficult to carve, but its beauty is beyond compare.
Spalting occurs in downed trees for a very brief period through a relationship with wood mushrooms, such as turkey tail.
If you find it within this small window of time, the wood is perfectly sound, but has been colored through a chemical reaction that gives it wonderful patterns.
I have a very small quantity of spalted birch.... perhaps only enough for two or three more spoons this season. This set is very unique. That is the way it is with spalted wood... no two will ever be identical, and each will have its own shape and idiosyncratic features.
I think whoever buys this these will enjoy using them. As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. These are heirloom quality spoons that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
