Wild Cherry Salt Bowl #1
Last August a lady asked me to carve a salt bowl for the rustic cabin she and her husband were building in the Smoky Mountains of TN. I came up with this little bird bowl design based on traditional Swiss carving.
I have been wanting to carve one to offer for sale ever since, but demand for spoons had been so great that I had to put my plans on hold. Finally, I axed out a piece of wild cherry that had the right grain pattern and immediately saw a salt bowl in in the wood.
Everything I carve, I hope to be used in kitchens and on the table. Salt dishes are very traditional and useful. The design is both functional and an artistic piece of woodcraft that should be a valuable additional to anyone's home decor.
Salt was once more valuable than gold, and it should never be seen as a mere flavoring. The term, "worth his salt" reminds us that soldiers and workers were once paid with salt if their work was particularly valued. Without salt, food has no flavor. Salt was used to preserve food and is essential to life.
The tail of the bird makes a very comfortable handle, and the whimsical shape should not only remind one to take pleasure in food, but it is sturdy and very practical. Of course, it could be used for spices, herbs or any condiment.
I think whoever buys this will enjoy using it. It is sealed with Walnut Oil. As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. This is heirloom quality piece that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
The second spoon is about 1/4rd larger. The grain is really pretty and I think it compliments the smaller spoon nicely. I really like these!
