Gorgeous work as usual Justin. I bet they sell quickly. Birch is likely what I will be using when I finally get around to starting. It is very popular here for all kinds of things. Bowls made from the birch burls can fetch a VERY high price. And birch utensils are quite popular.
Thanks. Birch is very traditional especially among Scandanavian and Russian carvers and anywhere folks from that part of the world settle. It is very nice to carve, too. Please share some pics of your work when you get going!
Hi Judson- Finally ordered my carving knives. So will have the knives and the chisels. Most likely going to start with a spoon as it looks like it could be the easiest for my brain to pass on to my hands. I really want to learn how to carve 3D bears, the comfort birds and such, but translating #d from my brain to my hands is going to be an interesting learning curve.
It will just take a little practice. Some people draw the shape/profile they are going to carve on the wood so they have a pattern. THe first part of learning to carve though, is learnign not to cut yourself. You may want to wear gloves or wrap up with duct tape..
